Daylilies in the Morning

It was still early when I shot this, and the blossoms opening for the day had not yet reached their potential. With the previous day's spent blossom still hanging on and at least four or five days of potential promise in coming buds, the daylilies spoke to me.

They really didn't speak. Actually, they sang "This is Your Life" by one of my favorite bands, Switchfoot. It's a very special song to me because it was one of the elements that encouraged me to make some important changes in my own life.

Part of the lyrics go like this:

yesterday is a wrinkle on your forehead
yesterday is a promise that you've broken
don't close your eyes, don't close your eyes
this is your life and today is all you've got now
yeah, and today is all you'll ever have
don't close your eyes
don't close your eyes

this is your life, are you who you want to be

this is your life, is it everything you dreamed that it would be
when the world was younger and you had everything to lose

yesterday is a kid in the corner
yesterday is dead and over

this is your life, are you who you want to be

this is your life, is it everything you dreamed that it would be
when the world was younger and you had everything to lose

Scene from a wedding. Red Shoes are for Traveling . . . Green Shoes are for . . .

Americana

This morning our town held its annual FFA parade, and so I'm dedicating this photo to my friend Cheryl who called at the last minute and said . . . "Let's go. I'm coming to get you in 15 minutes."

This little boy was driving a big ol' John Deere tractor right into downtown. How very exciting for him! I added a little retro-toning to this shot, and it could have been taken anywhere any time in the last fifty or sixty years.

I had a photography instructor once tell me that dragonflies were an easy subject to capture. She is a very accomplished nature photographer, but on that one topic she was dead wrong.

Still, I finally got one, so maybe number two will be a bit easier.

A cute cute senior! More to come.

I haven't decided if I like this color treatment or not. Perhaps the natural is more flattering but I find it fun. Anyway, I have places to be and things to do so this is my post for the morning.

Ivory Carving

Just thought I'd share one of the items I photographed last week for the antique auction catalog. The detail of this dramatic piece was absolutely fascinating.

Don't Go There

I took a nighttime photography class last night. This is just a little guard station and a 'Do Not Enter" sign across the street -- I zoomed during the long exposure, stopping several times along the way.

The class was fun, but not quite the locations that I expected when I registered. Since it was in Montrose, I think I was looking for more of a hip artsy type street with bars, pedestrians, quaint signs and neon. Instead we worked with a beautiful fountain, a city skyline and the bats flying out of the Waugh Street bridge. All still good, and coordinated by a wonderfully patient and practical instructor, Kathy Adams Clark. Kathy offers all sorts of photography classes through Leisure Learning here in Houston. This was my second of her classes, and I would recommend her to anyone.

Even though I didn't come out with the images I envisioned, we still had an opportunity to play with different techniques, and that was why I took the class in the first place.

Shooting with a dozen other people is fun and a great way to make new friends, but navigating around 12 tripods is just a little limiting for my taste. I think next time, I'd like to just go with two or three other shooters for this type of activity.

At the Bus Station

Another shot from one of the most fun senior sessions I have ever done. It's that time of year!
