BFF -- Best Friends Fast

Adelaide met her new little sister this afternoon. They took to each other right away, although new puppy's enthusiasm may be wearing a Addie a bit thin as we get closer to the end of the day.

Addie's mostly Aussie, and we've thought for a long time that she would do well with a companion to herd and care for. Baby is a 10 week old pointer, a stray, from a local animal shelter.

She needs a name so we can call her something. Suggestions???? No doubt you'll be seeing more of her here in the days to come.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We just got back from a FABULOUS trip to New York City. I have blisters on my toes and stars in my eyes from all the walking and sights to see!

That's Mike on the right, checking a map to get our bearings on our first night. He is so good with maps and directions that I just hung on and followed because I knew we'd never get lost.

An absolute highlight of the trip was our all too brief meet up with Hillary and Steve. Unfortunately, I was too excited about cramming as much visiting and talking into the time we had, that I didn't get away with a single decent image of us together. (Boo Hoo) SO . . . that's a great excuse for us to get together again. The Shemins are every bit as warm, friendly and engaging as you can imagine. No wonder they make friends everywhere they go.

I'll start the year out with a few images from the trip and then get back on schedule with new dailies. Once I process my New York shots, I'll also add a NYC album and provide a link.

Laughing with the Easter Bunny

This weekend I volunteered some time to shoot for a nonprofit event where one of my clients serves on the board of directors. I knew right away that this would be one of my favorite pictures from the day so I asked the little girl's mother if she'd mind me posting it as a POD. I do hope she gets on line and sees this.

Cropped to square and then used the On-One Photo Tools soft-wash treatment to get the high key effect.

Just Like Danny and Arnold -- Only we're both the pretty one. ;D

That's right, research and DNA testing have proven that Karina and I are identical twins separated at birth.

Aside from the fact that I am probably old enough to be her mother (had I been promiscuous in my youth) there is no other explanation for the fact that we look exactly alike and have so much more in common than just our birthdays. We share an incredible passion for photography, gardening, and our wonderful and very handsome and supportive husbands -- not necessarily in that order.

Yup -- Mamma did right by us! Happy Birthday SIS!

Taps

Today we laid a hero to rest. Uncle Raymond was my grandmother’s baby brother and he was 94 years old. This may have been the only funeral ever to include both military honors at the cemetery, and a whoopee cushion salute at the reception.

Uncle Raymond was a WWII veteran who provided distinguished service as a Flight Officer and a Glider Pilot. He served in Germany during Operation Varsity, landing his glider behind enemy lines during the largest single-day airborne operation of the War. Most of the glider pilots did not survive their missions. He was the recipient of the Air Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, and the Bronze Star.

He built his home with his own two hands. He raised countless dogs and a bit of wildlife as well as two outstanding sons. He loved his wife, kids, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and he taught us all how to live for the day. He took in countless troubled teen and preteen boys, giving them guidance and leadership. His vegetable garden was the standard by which all others are measured. He hunted, fished, photographed and filmed. He was the chief of the volunteer fire department and I can’t think of anything that he didn’t do and do well.

Most of all though, Uncle Raymond will be remembered as an outstanding storyteller and the king of practical jokes. The jokes and tricks he played on family, friends, and strangers could fill an entire book. Some were extremely elaborate while others were just silly, so it was only fitting that one of his granddaughters passed out whoopee cushions at the reception and asked everyone to blow them up and sit on them together. I believe I can still hear him chuckling over that sendoff.

If there was ever a great man, it was Uncle Raymond and we will miss him – but the world is truly a better place because he walked and worked in it for such a long time.

 . . . All is well . . . . safely rest . . . God is nigh!

Forty-one Years Ago This Month

In the middle of some cleaning and re-organizing I came across this delightful little snap from February 1968. I was all of seven years old and about two and a half years into my love of photography when I conned my little brother into trying on my ballerina costume and posing. He was about to turn four.

The flash shadow was cast by an oh-so-carefully-rationed -burn-the-bejeebers-out-of-your-fingers-flash BULB. The cubes came later. (And I'll bet there
s a whole generation that has no clue what I am talking about)

What a trip back into time. See the little suitcase on the far left hand side of the photo? That was my orange and white record player. I spent HOURS listening to music and Disney stories on that little turntable. The nightlight in the outlet, if you can zoom in, is a Donald Duck head. My mom still has the little rocking chair. It's pink.

I have no idea how I got Clay to put on that costume, but I sort of remember taking the picture. Probably I told him we needed to practice for some sort of Valentines play or performance.

By the way, this did not warp Clay's psyche at ALL. He is one of the two most wonderful big little brothers that a gal can have.

Sousaphones!

My husband and I were both band geeks in high school. He even carried the tradition on into college. Stands to reason that all of our kids would be in band too. (Today's band kids aren't so geeky anymore. They're pretty fine, good looking, smart, funny, and self-confident.)

I LOVE marching season. This shot reminds me of one of my favorite old-tyme stadium cheers. It went something like this . . . (in a very deep low voice)

Toooo Ba . . . .Toooo Ba . . . Tooooo Ba!

Okay, I guess I'm still a band geek, and proud to be one too.
