How High's the Water?

My friend, Lori, demonstrates how deep the water was on Galveston's Strand after Hurricane Ike. It's been right at 11 months since the storm devastated the entire island and much of the Houston area as well. We were amazed to see how much work has been done and how many businesses are open and ready for visitors. We had a wonderful getaway weekend.

Ryann Chelsea in the Rain

Oh . . . the fragrance of this little gem is straight from heaven. Mmmmmm... delish.

It's hard to say what's more exciting. The fact that the Ryann Chelsea Plumeria is actually open or the rain that fell. Yes! Those are REAL raindrops, not the kind that come out of a spray bottle. We only got a trace, but it was a very welcome trace.

The humidity is definitely up. I can tell because my lenses are fogging up for the first time this summer. Maybe that will condense into some more rain. Otherwise, going outside is like walking into a sauna. UGH! I keep reminding myself that some people pay lots of money to sit in a steam bath. We get it for free.

Lots of Water and a High SPF

Helped with a fundraising golf tournament, and it was another scorcher. We've now had seven consecutive days over 100. I'm all for record breaking, but not so enthusiastic about this one. At 103 degrees -- we once again broke the record from 1980.

Shelly > The Water Cisterns seemed out of place to me -- like they belonged in Hooterville rather than New York City, but they're required to supply water to all the tall buildings.

It's officially summer on Planet My Back Yard. Come on in. The water's fine.

This is my first planet ever, and I sure had fun making it. It is mostly water! Note that the plumeria has been retrieved. So far it's still green.

Day is done -- and so is the month of November.

Straight out of the camera, no pp. I tried opening the reflection up a little but liked it better the way it was.

My Dad's Old Diving Gear

The idea that anyone in his right mind would put these on his feet and go near water is totally beyond anything I can begin to comprehend . . . but then these belonged to my dad, and he would try anything.

Yesterday my mother, brother and I spent the morning clearing out the last treasures from a barn behind the cottage on my grandparents' property where we lived until I was about three years old.

These boots must have weighed 30 pounds each with the brass platforms and toe caps. Then . . . there was the lead weight belt that he wore around his waist -- and a very heavy canvas body-suit.

He must have totally trusted his dive partners, because the only way to breathe was through a rubber hose connecting this mask to a hand-pumped compressor that was fastened to a board and must have been kept in the boat. The dive suit also had some pocket type attachments that we guess were filled with air for bouyancy when it was time to come back to the surface. We can only imagine that the people in the boat had a rope connection to pull him back up because even the strongest man alive . . . (my daddy ) wouldn't be able to swim carrying all this weight.

The funny thing about this suit is that he used it at home -- mostly in Lake Austin - probably watching carp, perch and bass swim around him. Probably scared the bejeebers out of a few college coeds from UT as well.

I can't see any use for the boots today, but perhaps my brother will dress up like Herman Munster for Halloween one year. In any case, I'm glad he has them now. Dad would think it was fun.

Serenity between stampedes.
Saturday morning back in the woods waiting for the next group of racers to come by, I noticed drops of water on nearly every pine needle.
