Mustangs Fight!

I get a picture similar to this nearly every week. Probably it would behoove me to find a different angle, but can hardly tear myself away from this one.

There's nothing like the last minutes before a high-school football game begins. The air starts feeling just a little cool, (at least we aren't sweating anymore). Pretty girls with shiny pompoms and legitimately short skirts jump and smile and dance. The bands in the stands blast out fight songs while cheerleaders, and flagmen lead adrenalin-driven athletes onto a perfect green field with unbelievable fanfare.

This is America's finest -- our youth-- at their finest.

I've really learned to love football in the last few years and this was a FANTASTIC weekend, at least on the collegiate level. Oh . . . did I mention that my Alma Mater is now NUMBER ONE IN THE NATION!?!!?!?!?!!!!!

HOOK 'EM HORNS! Whoo HOO!

How do you corral nearly 70 people and get them into one shot? This is our high school cross country team, and they are some of the most incredible kids I've ever met. Who else can run several miles in 103 temperatures with greenhouse humidity and still smile? I'm sure you'll be seeing more of them in the days ahead.

Yesterday was team picture day. I arranged them behind the campus bleachers and climbed up top to get this shot. Last year we put the kids in the bleachers, but those in the back were dwarfed. This perspective gives everyone a little better visibility.

Even though we started at the crack of dawn, the sun came up hard and really played havoc with our lighting. We did individual portraits too, and I hope to work those and get them posted before too long. They ran their first meet this morning, and school starts on Monday.

Did I mention that I LOVE these kids?!?!?!?!

The bone-chiling track meet at Memorial High School was on par with some of the West Texas football games we remember. The only problem is that after you've lived in Houston for about 8 years, you don't have the cold-weather gear that would have made this meet bearable. Temps were into the teens before we left the track at 9 pm. I was never so glad to get home.
