Mama Sorenson's Daylily

Passed down for at least four generations, this daylily got its start in my great grandmother's yard. Thanks to my mother, enough bulb sets have been salvaged and passed along so that my brothers and I as well as our aunts and uncles and cousins have them too. I guess that makes these an heirloom variety in their own right.

The heat has pretty well zapped mine for the rest of the year, but I can count on them coming back again.

Hope in the Shadows

Yesterday Kim asked about Grace, the beautiful Kildeer mother whose nest I had been watching. I wish I had a real answer to report, but here's what I do know.

Her nest had been smack dab in the middle of our church parking lot (Grace Fellowship www.whatisgrace.org) -- hence her name. Some other members had spotted her first, stacked some rocks nearby and marked the area with traffic cones to keep her safe. I think everyone who saw her enjoyed showing her to their kids and talking about the wonders God puts into our lives.

Over the Fourth of July weekend, someone had moved one of her markers and used it to set off fireworks. I replaced it once, but the next day the parking lot was littered with even more firework debris and her markers had all been moved to the end of the parking lot. There was no trace of Gracie or her eggs.

I really felt low that morning because I THINK some neighborhood kids may have destroyed her nest. I HOPE, however, that Grace's eggs hatched before I expected them to and that somewhere in the little drainage ditch that runs by the parking lot she and her friend, Charity, are living happily with Love, Joy, Peace, Hope and older cousin Chiclet.

I have yet to post the last pictures of Chiclet, but will get them up and let you all know soon.

Daylilies in the Morning

It was still early when I shot this, and the blossoms opening for the day had not yet reached their potential. With the previous day's spent blossom still hanging on and at least four or five days of potential promise in coming buds, the daylilies spoke to me.

They really didn't speak. Actually, they sang "This is Your Life" by one of my favorite bands, Switchfoot. It's a very special song to me because it was one of the elements that encouraged me to make some important changes in my own life.

Part of the lyrics go like this:

yesterday is a wrinkle on your forehead
yesterday is a promise that you've broken
don't close your eyes, don't close your eyes
this is your life and today is all you've got now
yeah, and today is all you'll ever have
don't close your eyes
don't close your eyes

this is your life, are you who you want to be

this is your life, is it everything you dreamed that it would be
when the world was younger and you had everything to lose

yesterday is a kid in the corner
yesterday is dead and over

this is your life, are you who you want to be

this is your life, is it everything you dreamed that it would be
when the world was younger and you had everything to lose

Philippine Lily

This is one of the few things that's doing well in our garden right now. Everything else is terribly stressed from the constant rain. I believe we've had rain 25 of the last 28 days. Maybe now we'll dry out a bit, and before long, we'll be wishing for rain again.
