And the Rebel went down too! Both the Rebel re-enactors AND the DReb. Perhaps a little too much drama for one week.

First, Mike's re-enactor group portrayed the 13th Maine Infantry in last week's event in Madisonville. They actually look like a pretty cohesive group when they are on the Union side. And yes, the Rebels went down. Dern Yankees shot 'em in the back after a truce. Hmmmm.

And for real life. Remember the last week's 40D crisis? Well, the trusty if slow Rebel died this week. Actually, I think it's just a coincidence, but I feel like I've been chased by electronic gremlins. The good news is that the 40D is under warranty is somewhere between here and the Canon Service Center. I'm anxiously awaiting its return. The bad news is that I don't even have the DREB for backup right now. It may or may not be worth repairing, but in any case, it's not so trusty anymore. I know worse things could happen, so I will just go on.

At least things can be replaced and upgraded, so all will be right in a day or two. I'd been looking for an excuse to replace it, but had hoped to pass this one along to one of my sons who has an amazing artistic eye rather than bury it.

Oh -- by the way, here are the other re-enactment photos. Some of the Rebel's last stand, may she rest in peace.

Don't Shoot the Fiddler

Fun loving fiddle player from Waller TX -- at Madisonville Civil War Re-enactment yesterday afternoon. Overexposed and then faded in PP.

Thanks, Karen, for enlightening us to the zoom thumbnails. This this will be fun!

Well -- DONKEY DOODLES!

I know. This is a mule, not a donkey. I fully intended to post a photo of horse poop to exemplify my day, except it looked like . . . well . . . um . . . you get the picture. It seemed like a better idea to post something we could laugh at instead.

The beloved 40D went on the fritz last night. It's getting an error 99 message, and changing the battery or turning it off doesn't do the trick. Yes, I am in mourning, but am trying to keep it all in perspective. It is, after all, under warranty.

Hubby was participating in a Civil War re-enactment today in a little town just a couple hours up the road. I had been looking forward to going up there for several weeks, but was so frustrated about the camera that I nearly didn't go.

The weather was absolutely gorgeous and I really didn't want to punish myself just to show the camera who's boss, so I decided to make the best of it . Dusted off the old DREB as Andrea calls it . . . and headed up the road about two hours later than I had planned on leaving. Everything went wrong getting out of the house from nearly causing a bad wreck to getting on the wrong highway out of habit.

Once I got to the event site and started taking a few pictures, the day improved like I knew it would. I'm not too thrilled with my results and I want my 40D back -- but will have to deal with that on Monday. Until then, I'll resort to posting DREB photos from today or archive shots.

Today really was too pretty to have sat around sulking or doing housework or paperwork. That stuff will wait. Today is over and I would have missed it. I'm tired. I'm going to bed.

Happy Birthday To Me!

I took the day off work and used a good bit of it to catch up on some PP work. This is one of my favorite images from the Civil War re-enactment event at Liendo Plantation last Saturday.

This man knows how to ride for the camera and for the crowds. Everyone loved him, and it didn't hurt a thing that his horse was drop-dead gorgeous. For those of you who are looking for a real trip back in time (with all the comforts of the 21st century) here's the link to other images from the day.

My Soldier, My Hero

Mike is an avid military historian, and he participates in re-enactment events across the country several times a year. Sometimes, like today, he's Confedeate, and other times he represents the Union.

He says that even though sleeping outdoors with a single thin wool blanket is far from pleasant, he knows that he'll be back home in a warm soft bed in just a few days. One of the reasons he does this is out of gratitude and to remind himself of all the veterans who have endured painful and miserable conditions for months on end . . . not knowing when situations would end or if they would ever get to go home again.

Military heroes are all and plain ol' boys from home. They're someone's sweetheart. Someone's brother, someone's uncle or neighbor. And they are all someone's baby son. They have defended their homes and families since the beginning of time, and they continue to do so to this day.

So . . . here's to a belated Veterans Day and an early Thanksgiving. Happy November..

More photos from this weekend's event to be posted soon. In the meantime, for images from this same event, the Battle for Liendo Plantation, in 2005 and 2006, click on this link.

Okay . . . I'm frustrated. I can't seem to make the link work. Go to my home page

and scroll down to Civil War Reenactors. That's about the best I can do for tonight.
