Shelly > Sunday, August 16, 2009 How High's the Water? My friend, Lori, demonstrates how deep the water was on Galveston's Strand after Hurricane Ike. It's been right at 11 months since the storm devastated the entire island and much of the Houston area as well. We were amazed to see how much work has been done and how many businesses are open and ready for visitors. We had a wonderful getaway weekend. Shelly > June 1, 20087 We happened upon a watermelon and banana eating competition at the beach this weekend. A nice sized crowd gathered to watch, but it took some time and effort to recruit four people with enough spirit to take the challenge. The young man closest to the camera won. His prize . . . McDonald's Gift Cards. "The prospect of a long day at the beach makes me panic. There is no harder work than taking myself off to somewhere pleasant, where I am forced to stay for hours and have fun." Phillip Lopate

Shelly > July 31, 2007 The birds hanging out around this sign reminded me of a group of Vegas show girls waiting for their act to begin. The sign is very pale and faded, which added to its charm but also made it a little bland for photographing. I played around a little with the adjustment layers to get this effect. Open to additional suggestions.
Shelly > July 24, 2007 In the past 20 or more years I have passed up some amazing photo opportunities because I was always in a hurry and had to get to my next destination. It was a holiday and the relatives were waiting for us to arrive. One of the kids needed to be driven to band practice. I was on my way to a meeting and couldn't be late. Last week, however, that spell was broken. We ended our staff meeting in Galveston, and even though it was Dustin's birthday, instead of rushing home I headed back down to the beach. The day before, I had spotted an old souvenir shop built over the water, and because of the clam-shell display out front and the sign that said the shop had been family-owned since 1910, I knew it was one we used to frequent when I was a kid. I just had to go walk through for old time sake. The owners have added a porch on the back where you can sit and watch the water. This gorgeous storm had been brewing off the coast so I stayed out there and watched it --simply BECAUSE I COULD! As I headed back to my car, I stopped and took several pictures which I stitched together with photoshop. I wish now that I had gone just a little farther so the lifeguard stand would be more off-center, but for me, the important milestone is not that I took the picture, but rather that I took the time. Time to be still. Time to feel the breeze and the raindrops. Time to stand in awe and breathe. Time to say ,"What a masterpiece!" Time to say, "Thank you" -- simply because I finally could.
