Shelly  > Travel > New York City
Our first trip to New York City, December 27-30 2008. Pictures are posted in chronological order from our arrival at the hotel to our trip back home.

There are WAY too many pictures in this gallery, and some are just vacation snapshots, but this is our memory of the trip. Enjoy, and please share your comments on the sites and photos.

Shelly > The first thing we did when we hit town was to meet up with one of my delightful photography friends, Hillary Shemin and her husband Steve. They arranged their schedule to be in "The City" with their out of town guest on the day we arrived. This is Steve standing by the clock in the main lobby of the Waldorf Astoria.

They were running on a tight schedule, so we only had a few minutes together and I was so excited about our meeting that I didn't get a single usable photo with Hillary or even one of her and Steve together.

WONDERFUL -- FANTASTIC -- FUN People! We will see them again, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Shelly > St. Bartholomew's Church sits just across the street from the Waldorf. Beautiful Gothic building wiht rose windows.
Shelly > Looking catty-corner across the street back toward the Waldorf. They were flying a Greek flag along with the American flag when we arrived. During our stay we noticed flags from Portugal and New Zealand as well.

I LOVE the bright yellow taxis everywhere.
Shelly > One of our first views of the crowded New York Streets. It wasn't like this everywhere, but this was just as I always imagined it to be. It got heavier as we moved toward Rockefeller Center. So heavy, in fact, that we almost had no choice which way to go. Wherever the crowd went, we were swept along. Had we jumped up in the air, we wouldn't have come back down. We would have just been pressed between people and carried away.

Shelly > Our first glimpse of the tree at Rockefeller Center.

During the depression, I think it was 1931, most of New York's construction workers were unemployed when Mr. Rockefeller announced that he was going to build a huge new complex with nine skyscrapers. His project put countless men back to work. When December rolled around, the workers hopes were renewed and they brought the biggest most beautiful tree they could find to the center of the complex. That was the first Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, and there has been one in the same location ever since. How cool is that?
Shelly > Saks on Fifth Avenue had a storybook series in their windows. The story was called "A Flake Like Mike." I couldn't resist snapping this pic of Mike as we passed by a window with cartoonish captions. Blue monochrome toning along with selective coloring of the windows for a fantasy effect here.
