Friedrich Ernst, a German immigrant founded Industry, the first German settlement in Texas. People back in Germany sent letters to other immigrants in care of Herr Ernst, and expected him to deliver them to the intended recipients. It didn't take him long to construct and open the first post office west of Galveston. Naturlich he became the postmaster.
