Angel Scrabble
You are looking at one of my favorite Christmas gifts ever. I absolutely love to play Scrabble. Some days I'm pretty good at it, and other days I can't get past words like fat, tar, rim, and the like.
Aside from playing the game, I just love how the smooth wooden tiles feel in my hands while I sift through them contemplating my next move. So a few years ago, when I opened my Christmas present and it was a bowl full of Scrabble tiles, I was thrilled. Mike had bought at least four or five games to get enough letters to fill a little crystal bowl. No gameboard -- just a bowl full of letters.
I've kept it on my desk ever since, like a wordsmith's little zen garden. Sometimes I leave out a new vocabulary word, other times a cryptic messages for those who enter my office when I'm not around. Occasionally my co-workers play with them or play jokes like removing all the vowels.
And once in a great while the angels visit to play, reminding us to be in awe of the season.
Maybe diamonds really are overrated after all.
